"At the beginning of the beginning, even nothing did not exist."
Two men - one a Monsignor, one not - are interred in an apartment in Queens.  Packages of food arrive weekly.  The Monsignor drinks mezcal with abandon, but then the mezcal stops arriving.  They talk of Ishi and Grimes, Rashida and reality.  They try to explain to themselves what is happening.  There are explosions during the beginning of the book, but these wane.  A few freight trains pass by under the window.  But these stop.  They spend most of their time in bed.  There are memories and mystical musings.  The book ends where it began.
