I will be speaking about my book, Shalom/Salaam: The Untold Story of a Mystical Fraternity (Fons Vitae Publisher, Louisville, KY, 2010), which uncovers the strong, positive influence of Sufi mysticism on the development of Jewish mysticism from the inception of Islam through today's synagogue service.  It will be part of the event Shalom/Salaam: A Voyage to Jewish-Muslim Solidarity:

The International Human Rights Art Festival, in conjunction with New York City's Commission on Human Rights the Muslim-Jewish Solidarity Committee will spend a full day exploring the shared history, culture and spiritual connections between Jews and Muslims.  The program comprises:

  • Jewish niggun meditation
  • Persian poetry/setar music
  • Book talk: Shalom/Salaam: The Untold Story of a Mystical Fraternity
  • Exploration and workshop about medieval Jewish and Muslim poetry
  • Discussion with Widad Hassan, Lead Advisor for Muslim, Arab, South Asian Communities, Beth Miller, Liaison to Jewish Communities of NYC commission on Human rights
  • Musical workshop with NY Andalus Ensemble
  • A dinner highlighting shared cuisine!
  • An evening of performance, including dance, theatre, music and spoken word
